OPENING SESSION

 

Recognizing the opportunities and disruptions that accompany the digital transformation globally, the EU and its member states and countries in Asia are increasing their engagement on a broad array of digitalization issues. The aim is to establish mutually beneficial relationships between governments, commercial and civil-society stakeholders that strenghten connectivity, interoperability and compatibility. The EU has evolved into a frontrunner of digital regulation with extraterritorial effects, while the Indo-Pacific region is home to a vibrant digital ecosystem buoyed by booming e-commerce and FinTech applications, and the largest and most rapidly growing internet user bases in the world. But what are the norms and standards underpinning the digital infrastrucures, the digital economy and cyber security?

 

High-level representatives of governments and financial institutions in this opening panel kick off the debate about tangible steps that may foster digital connectivity between likeminded partners from the Asia and Europe. They will set the scene for the accompanying debate on the principles, approaches and standards that should guide the digital transition. Digital connectivity is broadly defined, and includes digital infrastructure, norms and standards for trusted connectivity, digital for development, and opportunities in the digital economy. What actionable steps can help promote an open, transparent and inclusive digital domain, and vibrant and resilient digital economies that benefit people? Can digital connectivity partnerships enhance sustainable and secure digital connections that support a prosperous and resilient Indo-Pacific region and European Union? Discussions also seek to make recommendations on how best to use the ASEM and other multilateral fora to achieve these objectives.
